Helena Basilova and Salvador Breed started composing the music in 2020 and performed the score for the first time together with a live screening of Aelita during Amsterdam Dance Event 2021 at the Eye Film Museum. This soundtrack was strongly inspired by themes of futurism, freedom, equality, love and longing as well as by the avant-garde set design created by prominent French-Ukrainian artist Aleksandra Ekster. We hear a combination of acoustic elements, representing life on earth, and digital elements representing life on mars. The combination of classical piano, synthesizers, and sound design result in a body of work that is both futuristic and at the same time pays tribute to the film’s vintage heritage.
